5-star recruit RJ Hampton has decided to forgo playing basketball in college to play professionally. Hampton, who was set to decide between Kansas, Texas Tech, and Memphis chose a different route on Tuesday. He will join the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian National Basketball League.
Hampton credits his decision to the success of Luka Doncic, who had a great rookie season in the NBA without going to college. This move will allow 6-5 point guard to focus on enhancing his game and developing his brand, although college could have possibly elevated his brand to a higher level being a part of the NCAA’s platform. It is rumored that his deal with the Breakers will exceed the G League’s $125,00 salary and that multiple shoe companies have offered contract to him as well.
